Everyone is welcome at the Groove Lounge. 

Artistic Director, David Webster, will be teaching his own style of Improv Comedy Acting Classes at the GROOVE LOUNGE

in downtown Staunton on MONDAY and TUESDAY nights from 6PM - 9PM

When each student enters the class in the Groove Lounge they are met by several of the Groove Cat Comedy Troupe Actors.  Our Actors share a philosophy of "NO JUDGEMENT, COMPLETE ACCEPTANCE of each other."

Which means everyone here has to care about each other and connect quickly on stage in any emotional situation without any hesitation.  Hesitation slows down the flow of improvisational acting.

This is not a class where you need to know jokes or even know how you are going to be funny.

The class begins with stretching and breathing

often on our backs on the floor.

Next the class will follow Mr. Webster as he leads vocal,

sensory and actor-to-actor connection exercises.

Once the group is connected we will act out scenes.  Mr. Webster will tell us where we are, who we are and what's happening.

Each student is trained to first close their eyes and imagine that they are actually experiencing the given situation.

Once the actor finds playing make-believe easy, Mr. Webster leads each student through a series of steps enabling them to play strong, emotional, real characters in pursuit of something they want from their partner.

Anyone can do this.

Over time, the people who enjoy the process will learn how to master dozens of improv games that generally occur once the actors have begun playing the situation that the audience gave to them.  The actors may have their emotions changed by the emcee throughout their scene which causes a lot of laughs or they may be asked to repeat the scene as "drunken cheerleaders".

There are many, many different games to master.

Students will also be trained in:

stage movement, vocal projection, the emotional arc of a scene, character, storyline, and on how to play the camera for TV and Film.

When the student is ready in class, depending on the individuals progress, we invite them to try acting in a live show with the GROOVE CAT COMEDY TROUPE.

Our troupe plans to push ourselves to master the art of improv and create the most engaging and entertaining live shows possible.

No experience is necessary.
